JSL Electrical Contracting is an owner-operated electrical business based in Broadbeach Waters, Queensland. With over 10 years of experience in the electrical trade, owner Jonty brings hands-on experience across residential, commercial and industrial projects.
At JSL, Jonty takes a hands-on approach to every job. As the owner, he is personally involved from start to finish, ensuring the same high standard of workmanship, attention to detail and care is delivered on every project. You deal directly with the owner, and Jonty is there to do the work - not simply oversee it.

What JSL does
JSL Electrical Contracting provides residential, commercial and industrial electrical services, with a strong focus on supporting the Gold Coast community. While we can take on a wide range of electrical work, residential homes are where we specialise.
Most of our work is across Broadbeach Waters, Broadbeach, Mermaid Waters, Southport, Surfers Paradise and surrounding areas. We have developed a particular niche working on older homes - homes that were wired for a different era and now need electrical upgrades to keep them safe, compliant and suitable for modern living.
Ceramic fuses, ageing switchboards, outdated wiring and smoke alarms that need to meet changing requirements are common in these homes. It’s not always the easiest work, and it’s not something every electrician wants to take on. JSL does.
With Jonty personally involved in every job, we take pride in fault finding, diagnosing problems properly and delivering high-quality solutions that stand the test of time.
Switchboard upgrades and repairs
Ceramic fuses, no safety switches, or a board that trips every time the kettle and the toaster go on together.
A switchboard built in the seventies was built for a house without a dishwasher, a heat pump or a car in the garage that needs charging. An old board on this side of the Gold Coast is usually running well past what it was designed for, which is why it nuisance trips, and why an inspection so often turns up something that should have been dealt with years ago.
An upgrade means a new enclosure, proper circuit protection, safety switches on the circuits that need them, and every circuit labelled so the next person knows what is what. Usually a day on site, and the compliance certificate comes with the invoice at the end of it.

Smoke alarms, testing and compliance
The deadline is 1 January 2027, and a lot of houses are nowhere near it.
Interconnected means that when one alarm goes off they all go off, which is the part that actually wakes someone at the other end of the house. Photoelectric means the alarm that responds to the smouldering fires that kill people in their sleep, rather than the ones that go off when you make toast.
If your alarms are the old nine volt battery kind, or they are more than ten years old, or there is one in the hallway and nothing in the bedrooms, the house will not meet it. It is a couple of hours of work, and you get a compliance certificate for your records at the end.

From Broadbeach and Mermaid Waters through Surfers Paradise and Bundall, most of what we do is within about ten minutes of home. Local enough to get there, set up to do it properly when we arrive.
Fault finding and repairs
No power. Lights flickering. Safety switch tripping. A burning smell.
Something is wrong and you want to know what, not a guess. Fault finding is methodical work: isolate the circuit, test it properly, and find the actual cause rather than resetting the switch and hoping it holds until the weekend.
That is what the test gear is for. Insulation resistance, earth continuity and loop impedance, measured and recorded, so the numbers exist if you ever want to see what was wrong and what was done about it.

New homes and renovations
Rough in, fit off, and the paperwork the certifier wants at the end of it.
A renovation is where the old wiring meets the new plans, and it is where the surprises live. Getting a sparky in early is what keeps them small: what can be reused, what has to be replaced, and what the switchboard can actually carry once the new circuits go on it.

EV charger installation
A dedicated circuit and a proper wall charger, planned around what your switchboard can actually carry.
Charging a car off a lead through the garage window works right up until it does not: a standard power point was never meant to run at full load for eight hours a night. A wall charger gets its own dedicated circuit and its own protection, so the car charges faster and nothing else in the house is competing with it.
The job starts at the switchboard, not the wall. We check what capacity the board has before anything is ordered, plan the circuit run, and fit the charger where the cable actually reaches the car. Certificate on the invoice like every job, and readings on request.

Hot water systems
Cold shower this morning. Electric hot water is electrical work, and the changeover is usually done in a day.
Electric hot water units fail in fairly predictable ways. The element goes, or the thermostat goes, or the tank finally rusts through and you find out about it via the laundry floor. The first two are a repair. The third is a replacement.

Power point installation and upgrades
New power points, moving one that is in the wrong place, adding outdoor or garage points, or replacing the ones that no longer grip a plug.
LED lighting and downlights
Downlights, outdoor and sensor lighting, and swapping tired halogens for LED that costs less to leave on.
Garden and landscape lighting
Lighting the outside of the house properly: garden beds, paths, the pool area and the driveway, wired and weather rated for where it sits.
Ceiling fan installation and replacement
Replacing a tired fan, or putting one in where there has never been one. The wiring, the switch, and the fan balanced properly so it does not wobble.
Appliance installation
Ovens, cooktops, rangehoods and dishwashers connected and tested, including the ones that need their own circuit rather than the nearest socket.
Data points and Wi-Fi access points
Cabled data points where the wireless will never quite reach, and access points positioned so the far end of the house gets a signal.

A safety switch is the thing that cuts the power before a shock becomes an injury. They are meant to be tested, and plenty of them never have been.

What you get when the job is done
Most sparkies hand over an invoice. Every job here ends with a compliance certificate, and the full test readings and photographs behind it are yours whenever you ask for them. The tests are run on a Fluke 1664 FC and checked against its own calibration sheet, because a measurement from uncalibrated gear proves nothing.
Call-outs and emergency work
The phone is answered around the clock. Say what has happened, and the visit gets arranged on that call, weekends included.
Compliance certificate
The certificate for the work, on every job, and it comes with the invoice rather than only when someone thinks to ask.
Test results

At JSL, we believe quality workmanship starts with using quality products. For switchboards, we primarily use Hager, with Clipsal and Schneider among our preferred brands for fittings and electrical components. We choose products based on their quality, reliability and suitability for the job.
That said, we understand that every customer has different preferences when it comes to style, features and budget. If you have a preferred brand or product, we’re happy to work with you, provided it meets the required Australian standards and is suitable for the application.

Questions people ask
The ones worth answering before you pick up the phone.
Rentals have had to comply since 2022. This phase is the owner occupied one, and there is no extension behind it and no grandfathering for older houses.
The quickest way to know where you stand is to look at what is already on your ceilings. Count the alarms, check the date stamped on the back of one, and see whether there is anything in the bedrooms at all. A house built before the mid 2010s will often come up short on at least one of those three.
A few things are a fair sign: ceramic fuses rather than circuit breakers, no safety switches, a board that trips when a couple of appliances run at once, or scorch marks and a smell around it.
Age on its own is not proof of anything, and neither is a board looking untidy. That is what an inspection is for, and the results get written down either way.
Every job gets a compliance certificate, and it comes attached to the invoice.
The test readings behind it, before and after photographs, and a short written summary of what was found are all yours on request. Ask when you book or any time afterwards. It is the part that matters when you sell the house, lease it out, or make an insurance claim.

If something is dangerous right now, switch that circuit off at the board and ring your electricity distributor while you wait.
If a job carries one, you hear about it on the phone before we come out, never on the invoice after. No number lands on you that you were not told about first.

Either way the price comes before the work starts, and the compliance certificate comes after it ends. That order does not change.

If it is not, ring anyway. The list is where we work most, not a boundary, and a job worth driving for is a job worth driving for. What we will not do is say yes and then take three days to get there.
